YOU ARE YOUR OWN LOTTERY TICKET

People believe they can skip over all the steps to success and still to arrive at financial wealth. The importance of education, of practice and preparation, are either underestimated, overlooked, or ignored.

Many people in our country have fallen victim to the lottery mentality. It’s as if we all want to be rich, but we want it the easy way. It takes 10,000 hours to master a craft. Instead of putting in our ten thousand hours and growing in skill and statue, we want to get lucky.

I understand the tendency. We have become more and more reliant on speed, particularly the speed of technology. We’ve gone from postal mail to telegrams, from faxes to e-mails and text messages, from instant messengers to Skype.

I strongly support one type of betting that is not only that is only fine but needs to be encouraged. You see, the word “courage” is part of “encouraged.” The type of bet that more of us need to make is betting on ourselves. I want you to bet on your dreams. Bet on your goals. Bet on the vision you have for your life. Bet on your new ideas. Bet on your passion. When you place those types of bets by putting money towards the pursuit of what is in your heart, it is not only a good bet, it is an investment.

When you bet on yourself, you are not gambling —you are investing

This is an excerpt of Hill Harper’s new book, The Wealth Cure: Putting Money in its Place. Who knew that Hill Harper had a personal finance gene. It’s nice to see an actor getting on the personal finance train.

We need more of them.
