Entrepreneurship is a dream for a lot of people and a lot of people think “working for the man” is something terribly wrong. Why?
A lot of people boast about being their own boss and setting their own hours as if to say that’s the best life one can have. Of course, it sounds good on the surface but it’s not all fun and games. I can tell you being an entrepreneur takes hard work and long hours. I work about 50 hours a week and I’m not paid by the hour, I’m paid by results, meaning I can work 50 hour weeks without pay if my results are not good.
Working for the man requires human capital such as a resume and good communication skills. It’s very easy to leverage a resume than to start a business from scratch. However, you must be a certain type of person that can work hard and fail and still remain positive. If you cannot take the fact that you can go a whole month without decent pay, you may not be qualified to become an entrepreneur. It’s not easy as it seems. If you’re not a risk taker, you may want to just take a job.
Many may gloat about Mark Zuckerberg, founder of facebook and Reid Hoffman, founder of Linkedin but they never mentioned how many hours they put in before they became a millionaire. No one ever tells the hard part about being an entrepreneur.
There’s nothing wrong with a 9-5 job with benefits. If you are able to pay your expenses and still find time to take a vacation or spend time with your children it’s not a bad life. However, if you have a 9-5 and still are having trouble paying bills indeed you have an financial problem. Don’t rush into starting a business because of money, Start a business because you love to serve others, not because of money, if you do, you’ll always be frustrated and impatient.
